I have been writing a single article per week for many years. Each article usually costs around 1–4 hours from start to finish. This made me believe that writing a book would be far easier than it is.
Boy was I wrong.
Writing a book is difficult and laborious. And I believe this is because of three reasons:
Writing a book is a different ballgame than writing an article. An article has a red line through the piece to carry the reader along. In a book, there has to be an overall red line, yet every chapter needs to have its own red line too. Every chapter needs to stand on its own, yet still contribute to the bigger picture. A book requires a more structured way of working than I’m used to.
Writing is rewriting. Every time I read it again there are things that could flow better or be improved.
Rewriting is like refactoring. Rewriting can affect other parts of the book leading to even more work.
In terms of pages, I am halfway done and I feel good because I felt stuck for a while. Now I feel unstuck and inspired. I have a better idea of how I will be able to weave everything I want to say together.
Halfway done in terms of pages does not mean I am halfway done.
I’m not worried about the rewriting. Maybe it’s hubris from never having written a book before.
Once the rough draft is there, it still will be a lot of work but I believe it will be far more predictable than the creative work of getting that first version out there and having every single part working together contributing to a bigger narrative.
Only time will tell!
